Corporal Michael SLEAVON VC
Died: Ireland - 14 August 1902
Burial details: Bannagh Churchyard, Tubrid, near Ederney, Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland
Corps service: He enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1847, but being a stone mason he was soon transferred into the Royal Sappers and Miners. He saw five years service in Bermuda. In 1856 the Royal Sappers and Miners were amalgamated with the Corps of Royal Engineers. In 1861 he was serving in Mauritius where he lost his VC while on a night out in Port Louis. He was given permission to purchase a replacement. He was discharged on 25 April 1871 at the age of 44, after 24 years' service.
VC awarded: Won VC at Jhansi, India, on 3 April 1858 (Indian Mutiny - 1857)
VC unit: 12 Field Company
VC presented: VC presented in India in 1860.
VC citation: For determined bravery at the attack of the Fort of Jhansi on 3 April 1858, in maintaining a position at the head of a sap, and continuing the work under a heavy fire, with a cool determination worthy of the highest praise.
