Enlisted into the Royal Sappers and Miners when he
was 21 years old (c1843), he was a stone mason by trade. He served
13 years with the Colours, six of which were in Gibraltar prior to
being sent to the Crimea. He was discharged from the Royal Engineers
as a sergeant in April 1867 and may have afterwards worked at Pentonville
Prison. |

| VC citation: |
Distinguished conduct 21 July 1855, in connecting the
4th Parallel Right Attack with old Russian Rifle-Pit in front. Extremely
creditable conduct on 23 August 1855, in charge of the advance from
5th Parallel Right Attack on the Redan, in placing and filling 25
gabions under a very heavy fire whilst annoyed by the presence of
light balls
Intrepid and devoted conduct in creeping to the Redan in the night
of 8 September 1855, and reporting its evacuation, on which its occupation
by the English took place.
