Corps service: He was commissioned into the Corps in 1908. His first posting was to 56 Field Company, Bulford, England. He was then posted to Gibraltar but by 1914 was back in England with 15 Field Company. After the First World War (1914-18) he served 12 years in India returning to England as a major general to command the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich in 1938.
In April 1942 he was in the Western Desert and given the Cyrenaica Command, but was unfortunately captured by the advancing Germans under General Rommel. He spent time as a Prisoner of War in Italy (1942-43). He retired as Lieutenant General Sir Philip Neame VC, KBE, CB, DSO in 1947.
VC awarded: VC won at Neuve-Chapelle, France, on 19 December 1914 (First World War 1914-18).
VC unit: 15 Field Company
VC presented: VC presented by King George V at Windsor Castle on 19 July 1915.
VC citation: For conspicuous bravery on 19 December 1914, near Neuve-Chapelle, when, norwithstanding the very heavy rifle and bomb-throwing by the enemy, he succeeded in holding them back and rescuing all the wounded men whom it was possible to move.
