Born: Foochow, China - 19 December 1891
Second Lieutenant Cyril Gordon MARTIN VC
Died: Woolwich, London - 14 August 1980
Burial details: Cremated at Blackheath; ashes scattered on Pew Tor, Devon.
Corps service: Commissioned into the Corps in 1911. Brigadier Martin was made a Companion Of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). He also held the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). With the Northern Command in India in 1939 he was the Deputy Chief Engineer. He served in Iraq in 1941 as Chief Engineer, British troops. From 1945-47 he was Chief Engineer with the North-West Army, India. During this time he was also ADC to King George VI.
VC awarded: Won VC at Spanbroekmolen, Belgium, on 12 March 1915. (First World War 1914-18).
VC unit: 56 Field Company
VC presented: VC prsented by King George V at Buckingham Palace on 12 July 1915.
VC citation: For most conspicuous bravery at Spanbroek Molen on 12 March 1915, when in command of a grenade throwing party of six rank and file. Although wounded early in the action, he led his party into the enemy trenches and held back their reinforcements for nearly two and a half hours, until evacuation of the trench was ordered.
