| Corps service: |
Commissioned into the Corps in 1848, after which he
was posted to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) where he served until he was
posted to the Crimea. After the war he served with the 23rd Company
during the Indian Mutiny. In 1870 as a brevet colonel he was sent
as military attaché to the German Army during the Franco-Prussian
War (1870-71). In 1882 he commanded a Brigade during the Egyptian
Expedition. He ended his army career as Lieutenant General Sir Wilbraham
Lennox, VC, KCB. |

Won VC at Sebastopol, Crimea, on 20 November 1854. (Crimean
War 1854-56). His was the first Royal Engineer VC winner. |

VC sent out by War Office to Hong Kong on 26 June 1857,
probably presented in England on his return from India. |
| VC citation: |
Cool and gallant conduct in establishing a lodgment
in Tryon's Rifle Pit, and assisting to repel the assaults of the enemy.
This brilliant operation drew forth a special order form General Canrobert.

The disappointments due to the prolongation
of the siege of Sevastopol led to General François Certain Canrobert's
resignation of the French Army command, but he did not return to France,
preferring to serve as chief of his old division almost up to the
fall of Sevastopol. |
