Lieutenant Gerald GRAHAM VC
Died: Bideford, Devon - 17 December 1899
Burial details: East-the-Water Cemetery, Bideford, Devon (grave C#523)
Corps service: Commissioned into the Corps in June 1850. He was one of the first recipients of the VC. After the Crimea he saw active service in the Indian Mutiny (1857), China (1860) and Egypt (1882), where he commanded a brigade. He commanded the Suakin Expedition (1884) and retired in 1890 as a Lieutenant General. In 1899 he became a Colonel Commandant of Royal Engineers. Lieutenant General Sir Gerald Graham was a Knight Grand Cross of the Bath (GCB), also a Knight Grand Cross of St Michael and St George. (GCMG) and the Légion d'Honneur of France.
VC awarded: Won VC at Sebastopol, Crimea on 18 June 1855. (Crimean War 1854-56)
VC unit: Royal Engineers attached.
VC presented: VC presented by Queen Victoria at Hyde Park, London, on 26 June 1857.
VC citation: Determined gallantry at ther head of the ladder-party, at the assault of the Redan, on 18 June 1855. Devoted heroism in sallying out of the trenches on numerous occasions, and bringing in wounded officers and men.
