The Museum and Library hold an enormous amount of material which still
has real relevance to today's Sappers and other military
units.
We can give new members of the Corps an insight into
the amazing actions and achievements of their forebears,
assist with providing a background history to many of
the current operations such as Afghanistan and Iraq,
help with course assignments and provide a venue for
functions.
- Guided tours.
These give a general introduction to Corps history.
Groups are lead through the Museum Galleries by trained
museum staff. The history of the Corps is discussed
giving groups a unique insight into the stories behind
many of the artefacts on display as well as a chance
for group members to ask questions of their own.
- Talks and lectures.
These cover topics varying from the work of the museum
to preparations for battlefield tours, or hands-on
workshops using the historical model bridge collection.
- Object handling sessions.
The Museum can arrange viewings of artefacts not normally
on show to the public, giving a closer look at details,
materials and/or contents.
Regiments and Squadrons can look at artefacts from
their past. 5 Field Squadron could view material relating
to Rorke's Drift and the Zulu War or groups from Survey
could look at some of the early 18th Century Ordnance
Survey Maps held in the collection.
Additionally we are happy to arrange viewings of the
original Victoria Crosses held in the collection.
This requires at least two weeks notice and we will
divide groups into smaller viewing groups.
-
Brief Introductory talks.
For groups with a tight schedule these often provide
a good alternative to full guided tours. Museum staff
will welcome your group and give a 10 minute talk
on what the Collection
holds and important artefacts to spot on your way
through the galleries.
- Quizzes
Visits can then be enhanced with group members facing
the challenge of our Sapper Quiz. The Museum can also
tailor quizzes to specific subjects, for example,
by liaison with staff at the RSME Plant Wing we were
able to design a quiz for courses comparing today's
equipment with that of the Second World War.
See the History Section Quiz page.
- Unit presentations and functions
The Museum has four rooms for private functions and
marquees for outdoor functions. In the past we have
hosted the presentation of the RSME's Plummer
of the Year award as well as cocktails parties
and lunches.
See our Corporate page for details.
The Museum is happy to tailor its services to the needs of each Corps and Cadet group that visit.
